Set up communication with the printer

The settings are technical. If your are not familiar with the different communication protocols, you should seek help from a system administrator for more information or for assistance.

Objective will control the printer through the separate Objective Print Server process. To enter the correct settings, it could be important to know where (on which physical server) the process is running.

Consult the manual of your printer / adapter card / operating system for the correct settings.
Also check the setting of the printer itself.

If you enter the settings using the New Printer Wizard go to step 4.

Choose Resource Management > Printers in the Navigation Pane.
Choose a printer.
Choose sub tab Communication.

Depending on the chosen communication type, enter the following settings:

Field	Explanation
Host	Enter the network IP address (fixed) or printer host name, here.
Port	Enter the port used for FTP here. In many cases the default FTP port is 21.
User Name	Enter the user name to be used to log on to the printer FTP server.
Password	Enter the user password to be used to log on to the printer FTP server.
Transfer mode	ASCII: sends the information to be printed in ASCII (text) format. BINARY: sends the information to be printed in BINARY format.
Active mode	Check the check box if the printer must be controlled using active (ACTIVE) FTP. Uncheck the check box if the printer must be controlled using passive (PASSIVE) FTP.
Timeout (in s)	Records the maximum time in seconds that the Objective Print Server waits for an answer from the printer. Unchecked The application that sent the print order will wait for an answer from the printer. Checked When the timeout entered is exceeded, Objective presumes that printing has failed and will generate an error message. Attention: Don't set the duration of the timeout too short. Depending on the model of the printer it could be that the printer needs multiple seconds to process the sent data. Other printers don't always send a confirmation, in which case this setting cannot be used. If this is the case, the timeout should be disabled.
Remote file name	Enter the file name to be used on the printer, here. Many printers work with 1 fixed file name and only process files with this exact file name. In some cases, for example, it isPR1.

SERIAL

Field	Explanation
Port	Enter the name of the serial port of the computer (on which the Objective print server runs) to which the printer is connected, here. Typically this is a name like COM1, COM2, etc.
Baud rate	Enter the corresponding serial port settings here. The serial port and printer must work correctly with the same settings.
Parity	See printer manual.
Data bits	See printer manual.
Stop bits	See printer manual.
Handshake protocol	See printer manual.
Drain on close	Ensures that any buffered, non-read data are removed from the port before closing the port.
Timeout (in ms)	Records the maximum time in seconds that the Objective Print Server waits for an answer from the printer. Unchecked The application that sent the print order will wait for an answer from the printer. Checked When the timeout entered is exceeded, Objective presumes that printing has failed and will generate an error message. Attention: Don't set the duration of the timeout too short. Depending on the model of the printer it could be that the printer needs multiple seconds to process the sent data. Other printers don't always send a confirmation, in which case this setting cannot be used. If this is the case, the timeout should be disabled.

PARALLEL

Field	Explanation
Port	Enter the name of the parallel port of the computer (on which the Objective print server runs) to which the printer is connected, here. Typically this would be a name like LPT1:, LPT2:, etc.
